31 Days

31 days are all that stand between us and the next chapter (which we have sweetly titled “love, law and the lou”). 31 more days of hiking city hills and catching the view of pale square houses nestled along the rivers. 31 more evenings of sirens and yellow-orange sunlight deep into 9pm. 31 more humid Pittsburgh nights, sitting in lawnchairs with cans of iron city sweating on the ground below us.

The move looms constantly behind our backs, coloring the whole summer. Matt is restless; I am anxious. But as Leonard Cohen muttered, that’s no way to say goodbye.

There are so many promises hanging like fruit in the next 31 days: another sunny afternoon at the farm, a roadtrip to NYC and CT (where we will watch my stepbrother marry his charming fiancee), the final Ukiah show, a possible multihouse summertime party and plenty of time in between for dinner with friends, long walks, kennywood, and etching into our memories everything we love about this town.
